TWO weeks Under the Umbrella

I'm so sorry that I am late on the MLK activities! I hope you find them interesting and will put them on your wish list for next year. Or, you could also use them in February for Black History Month.

First up is Speech Room News' MLK Language Activities. These are great and both the kids and I learned a lot.

Next up is a new activity for me and it's a creativity! I love these! MLK puppets were a hit in my speech room and we used these for both artic and language.

Now for this week -- Friday is Chinese New Year! Actually, it should be called Lunar New Year. I love celebrating this holiday and we had all kinds of activities in speech beginning with Super Power Speech's The Great Race Unit.

(side note, check out my sweet student's nails! She always has the prettiest nail polish. I should introduce her to Jamberry Juniors! More to come on this on Sunday!)

I also used crafts out of this book

Greeting cards!

So that is my brief two weeks. NEXT week, I have something very special for all of you and all my fans over on The Posh SLP. Stay tuned!!!

My week under The Umbrella

This week was fun, rough, busy, tiring, and basically fabulous.  I started the week with a phonemic awareness book companion for The Snowy Day. Sorry I don't have any pictures for that, but it was crazy busy. BUT - here is the link to the unit from Speech Universe.  It is a great unit that I really enjoyed using with the kids and it's inexpensive too!

Then, I had an "ah-ha" moment on Thursday while I was working with some first graders.  Most of my students need help with sight words. Either they have trouble with a specific sound in them, or they are having trouble with the reading of them all together. So I did some searching on TpT and found a set of games for sight words that is geared to K and 1st grade and uses Dolch words.  The kids did great with them and were so excited to practice those words! What's more the games are FREE. Here's the link.

Ok, ok, ok. So, not all of the game boards had all the sounds in them that I wanted for artic. Back to TpT I go.  Never fear…. I found these!

These games are geared toward specific articulation sounds AND they use sight words! SCORE. Here is the link for the Z unit, which includes a homework page and both black and white game boards.  Here is the link for the R game board (1 page). Both are FREE! Karen Pritchett is the creator of these units and she has created more sounds as well and bundled them here. Those are on sale right now for $8.50 and are ON my wish list!

Do you use sight words in speech therapy? How do you feel about it? I have heard some speech therapists say, "I'm not a reading teacher." But, come on! We have to all work together and give the students what they need in my opinion…. and if I can work on artic AND sight words, I think that is a win/win!

So, look what I saw at Target this week:

Its a little tee shirt that would be perfect for my 3 year old! I thought it was such a cute image and just wanted to share.  I love my life under The Speech Umbrella!

And just another little side note… did y'all know I have another blog? It's called The Posh SLP and it is all about beauty, fashion, reviews, family, classroom design, and whatever else! It is not about speech materials or TpT haha! That's what The Speech Umbrella is for! ;-) Anyway, follow this link and give me a like on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, and Bloglovin'!

XOXO!

Who is hibernating? And, my week under The Umbrella

Did y'all think I had dropped off the face of the earth? Haha! Well, I had back surgery and have spent some time away from my blog while recuperating.  I went back to work this week and I wanted to show you a little about what we did in my speech room!

Who is hibernating???

This little craft is quick and easy to make.  What you need:
black construction paper
white paper
pencil
scissors
googly eyes
glue

1. Draw a cave opening on the black construction paper with a pencil
2. Cut icicles from the white paper
3. Tear ice cubes from the rest of the white construction paper
4. Glue the icicles across the top of the cave outline
5. Glue the ice cubes all around the cave to make a kind of igloo shape
6. Glue the googly eyes so they are looking out of the cave

The kids loved making this craft and we got so many language goals accomplished by talking about who was in the cave and what hibernating is. Hope you have a fun time with this craft too!

This wasn't the only activity that I used in my speech room this week. I gave lots of winter themed homework with the Winter Worksheets & HW Packet for Speech Therapy from Busy Bee Speech. I also used There Was A Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow: Language Unit from Crazy Speech World (check out her NEW website!).

This is a glimpse at my therapy table this week….
From left to right…
3. 2013-2014 SLP Planner (CANNOT live without it!)
4. iPad

All in all it was a great week back! How was your week?
